An intimate journey through the work on paper of Pierre Soulages

Rarely highlighted in dedicated exhibitions, Soulages' work on paper is a major part of his artistic career. As early as 1946, the artist appropriated techniques such as walnut stain, ink and gouache to create works of remarkable formal power.

The exhibition brings together nearly 130 paintings, including 25 works never before shown to the public, created between the 1940s and the early 2000s. These pieces, many long kept in the painter's studio, reveal the constancy and freedom of his artistic approach.

What you'll see

  • Works in walnut stain, a material dear to cabinetmakers, with unique qualities of transparency, opacity and luminosity, contrasting with the whiteness of the paper;

  • Paintings also done in ink and gouache, with smaller formats, but which lose nothing in intensity and formal diversity;

  • A plunge into the heart of an intimate and decisive plastic language that sheds new light on Soulages' artistic evolution!
