For the first time in France, the work of Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral is on show at the Musée! From October 9 to February 2, 2025, the exhibition "Tarsila do Amaral. Painting Modern Brazil" invites you to discover over 150 paintings by a visionary artist.
A visionary artist
Tarsila do Amaral is one of Brazil's most influential and beloved artists. As early as the 1920s, she established herself with a unique style, drawing on her country's indigenous imagination and modernist transformations.
At a time when Brazil occupies an increasingly important place in the discourse of "globalized" art, and when women artists are beginning to reclaim their place in the narratives of art history, this retrospective is an exceptional opportunity to explore the richness and diversity of her work.
Multi-faceted masterpieces
Trained in Paris, where she immersed herself in the European avant-garde, Tarsila do Amaral has created a singular pictorial language, blending Cubism and Primitivism with Brazilian influences.
The exhibition features major works from the "Pau Brasil" and "Anthropophagic" movements of the 1920s, where brightly colored landscapes alternate with mysterious, fantastical visions. In the 1930s, her paintings become political, then progressively geometric and abstract in the 1960s.
Beyond its aesthetic dimension, Tarsila do Amaral's Work raises social and identity issues, inviting us to rethink the boundaries between tradition and avant-garde, learned and popular cultures.
