"Painter-architect" : this is how Léopold Sédar Senghor described Soulages in a 1958 text. Poet Edouard Jaguer, for his part, insisted on his "masoned, trowelled" colors, his canvases whose forms held together "like the framework of a house". As a constructed occupation of space, Soulages' art is in constant dialogue with architecture, right down to his careful consideration of installation and hanging arrangements.
